You know how feeling good about ourselves is positively affected by feeling attractive?  Boats are no different.  Therefore the new varnish on the rails should be considered a safety feature as a pretty boat is a happy boat.  A happy boat is a safer boat.   And yes, I am engaging in anthropomorphism.

This is before all the pretty new varnish.....
