The Plan: Down the Delaware Bay - Claire

Our first leg will be sailing down Delaware Bay Estuary from Delaware City, DE to Lewes, DE. We may stop in Lewes or continue to Cape Cod, MA.

Delaware City to Lewes is about 70 miles. We could stop at the Cohansey River, NJ, a beautiful wetlands refuge, if we have time. From Lewes to Cape Cod is about 340 miles. We hope to travel 7-8 MPH, which would take 2 days. Right now the weather window looks good all week.

Today we had a Vessel Safety Check done by the Wilmington Sail and Power Squadron and learned a couple of things. We recommend all boats have this voluntary educational visit. More at http://cgaux.org/vsc/

The Delaware Bay is very shallow with lots of shoals. The shipping channels can be busy, so we want to stay out of them. Because of the shallows, it could be a rough ride if there are high winds against the tide, but winds looks good so far on PredictWind (https://www.PredictWind.com).

We might see the Cape May Ferry. We'll pass Cape Henlopen and Cape May and some lighthouses. Here is the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Blog: https://cmlferry.wordpress.com/2016/08/04/5-must-see-lighthouses-on-the-delaware-bay/
