Newport, RI (Mackeral Cove)

We anchored in Mackeral Cove, west of Jamestown, 8/29-31. The north protected by Mackeral Cove Beach and the sides by land. View from our boat below.

The CG visited to investigate the location of a large floating tree stump.

We chose this area since protected from the forecast north winds for a couple days.

When you find you have a beautiful place to yourself, you have to ask "What's wrong with it?"

We already knew that swells would make their way up the cove. The winds were predicted to be moderate or strong, but they were light at first which was not enough to keep our nose into the wind (stern to swell), so we set a 2nd anchor which worked pretty well. It kept us from the natural boat behavior of being sideways to the swell and rocking side to side ( not fun ).

We also reefed the mizzen to help keep our nose to the north. Much better. We made the sail as tight as possible and didn't notice it making any noise during the day, but during the night it sounded really noisy. Inspection revealed no change in it's adjustments. I guess we didn't test the noise from the bedroom under the mizzen.

9/1 Off to Fisher's Island, NY West Harbor which is protected from the south, west and east when winds are predicted from there.
